In April of 2008, Renner Herrmann S.A. announced a new investment, this time in the dairy industry: the industrial processing of the whey generated in the production of cheese, transforming it into powder and adding value to this product.
The company plans to invest R$ 30 million in an industrial plant measuring 5,000 m² (53,820 sq. ft.), built on a lot that measures approximately 150,000 m² (161,460 sq. ft.), which will begin operations in the first half of 2010.
In its initial phase, the plant will have an installed capacity to produce whey powder from 1,500,000 liters (396,258 gallons) of whey per day, creating more the 100 direct jobs.
Today, the whey is often dumped directly into rivers and tributaries because of the lack of opportunities to use this raw material, which contributes to environmental pollution. The processing and industrialization of whey will help safeguard the environment while creating opportunities for cheese manufacturers to expand their production, which is currently limited by the difficulties in disposing of residues generated in their production processes. The whey powder, in addition to expanding the horizons for cheese manufacturers, also becomes an important and coveted raw material for the food industry, in the production of cookies, breads, pasta, nutritional supplements, animal feed, etc.
Currently, approximately 50% of the whey powder used in Brazil comes from other countries.
Location
The Relat - Laticínios Renner plant will be built in the city of Estação, in the northern region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the epicenter of a large area of cheese manufacturers in the state, as well as in Santa Catarina and Paraná.
